It’s hard to imagine a more veggie-friendly city than Berlin: a vegan dream that leaves ethical eaters spoilt for choice with options in every corner of the capital. However, I was pretty surprised on my recent trip to discover there weren’t nearly as many gluten-free-friendly places as I imagined there would be. Few places mark GF items on the menus, with one cafe openly offering gluten-free bread (Cafe Oliv in Mitte), and I tracked down only one totally gluten-free bakery (Jute Bakery in Prenzlauer Berg). Not to worry because here’s a line-up of five great gluten-free and vegan options in Berlin plus one I missed out on visiting!
Amazing ‘Mexistralian’ street food that is very VG & GF friendly. A cute little spot in Neukölln with sweet candlelight vibe at night. Serves up great burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. Perfect for small groups or a casual dinner for two. Check out the menu on their website. Closed Mondays. 5-10pm. Cash only.
Stylish clean eating restaurant above Veganz supermarket in Friedrichshain. Quite a beautiful spot with spots for solo diners and couples as well as larger tables for groups up to 8. They have a great menu that is entirely GF and VG, from breakfast through to dinner. They don’t have their full menu online, but their website features details of their key dishes to give you an idea of what to expect. Open 7 days. 10am-11pm.
Chic VG restaurant in Mitte from the team behind Cookies/Cookies Cream. Perfect for a special brunch/dinner. Staff were very helpful in adapting the menu for GF options; pretty much everything was a possibility. Pop around the corner to Newton Bar for a cocktail before/after dinner. Open 7 days. 9am-late. English website with menu updated weekly.
A designer raw food cafe in Mitte. Cool, Nordic interiors with a stylish outdoor terrace. Raw superfood dishes to eat-in or takeaway. Cold-pressed juices and great coffee. No menu online but just take a look at their Instagram to get you drooling. German website. Open 7 days. 10am-9pm.
Charming VG cafe tucked away on a quiet pretty Neukölln street. A great spot to sit and eat GF cake with coffee on a weekday. On Sundays, the popular buffet breakfast pulls a big crowd so come prepared to queue. Their menu isn’t online. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays and for a couple of weeks each summer. Midday-6pm.
Here is the one place I really wanted to visit but missed out on! Cute-looking VG/raw cafe situated in the Bikini Berlin concept mall near Zoo Station. Could be the perfect breakfast or lunch spot if heading out this way to check out the Helmut Newton Foundation nearby. Their menu is online featuring GF muesli for breakfast and sandwiches and salads for lunch alongside a large selection of fresh juices and coffees. Open 7 days. 9am-8pm aside from Sundays when they open midday-6pm.
