You’re greeted with a high-five and a shot. In that order. But don’t worry, this isn’t a huge party hostel. In fact, the award-winning Home Hostel, run by its very own Mamma, lives up to its name by providing guests with a cosy base for their adventure around the Portuguese capital.
Situated in the Baixa area of Lisbon, Home Hostel is very centrally located on the edge of the main shopping area on one side and the iconic castle district on the other. Most bars and clubs are within an easy walking distance, as are most things in central Lisbon as it is a pretty compact city. The benefit of not being slap in the middle of the up-all-hours area is that it’s quiet and peaceful but if you want to party then there was always a group of guests checking out the options together.
As a solo traveller in my 30s, I was really surprised by the age range of the other guests. I hung out with people from their late teens well into their 40s here and everyone was very easy going and friendly. There was always someone to hang out with in the bar and I quickly made loads of new friends. The staff were also incredibly friendly which just added to the great atmosphere.
The hostel is situated within a large apartment building, with the reception/bar/etc on one floor, and all the guest rooms on another, with other private apartments. I stayed in a six-bunk female dorm and it was lovely. The rooms are huge, clean and well-equipped, with well-designed bunks that contain a huge drawer for all your own storage needs in the base. These are lockable with your own small padlock if you have one, but I felt totally safe leaving it unlocked too. The room had a couple of mirrors, a hairdryer, plus a desk and a chair. The shower rooms across the hall were very clean and you could hire towels at reception if you didn’t have your own. Wifi is free and available throughout the whole building, so it’s always easy to get online whenever you want.
I am so glad I chose to stay at Home Hostel on my recent trip to Lisbon! It is such a beautiful city and my stay here just made it even more perfect.
